One of the most popular items ever carried by OceanJ, we always carry a variety of styles that suit every occasion, every season and every colour combination you might choose to wear.
But where did they come from originally? Gail has been finding out.
“It probably goes without saying that scarves originated in Ancient Rome” says Gail.
‘Originally they were used to cleanse the skin of sweat, what a nasty thought, but this is way back in ancient times, long before we were civilised enough to wash daily, so the original name “sudarium” which is latin for Sweat cloth makes sense.
‘The Romans then started to use scarves as part of military uniform as a way of keeping the neck warm and that’s where it really became a recognised piece of clothing, however they weren’t like the scarf we know and love today, they were closer in appearance to a cravat.
‘In the 19th century scarves were worn to display one’s political leanings, something that still has some significance today with staunch political folk wearing only the colours of their party around their necks.
‘Scarves in the olden days were usually made from cloth, wool making an appearance in the early 20th century.
‘Nowadays scarves are ubiquitous, as necessary as a fashion accessory as they are to keep the neck warm. With millions of variations available they have become something everyone has lots of. Designs, fabrics, patterns, colour ways all play an important part in scarf fashion, that’s why here at OceanJ our collection is ever evolving.

‘I love scarves, anyone who knows me always comments that I am never seen without one, and I suppose that is why OceanJ has become the go to site for cool, contemporary, affordable and fashionable scarves. I’m just glad I wasn’t a Roman soldier having to wear one and use it to clean myself too!”
