We recently caught up with Emil, our online blog and social media partner to ask him about his favourite item on the oceanj website.
“That’s easy! I love the Ayala Bar crosses. Being an avid collector of crosses (and other religious artefacts) I found these particular versions to be ‘just’ gorgeous. The collection I have is vast, in excess of 40 that are accessories, necklaces to be exact. I don’t wear them very often these days but in years gone by when youth was on my side, it wasn’t out of the realms of probability that a cross would be worn round my neck most days. In fact there would usually be a couple or more’.
“Am I religious? Well I was brought up in a fairly religious household, but my love of all things cross shaped stems from a design and fashion point more than a religious one. I am fascinated by the shape and what it evokes for the wearer. Crosses have a calming effect on me when I wear them, that’s one reason for doing so, but another is because of the iconoclastic meaning behind them, and all other religious symbols. The mystery and the statement make for thought provoking accessories, something I very much enjoyed as a young man growing up in an industrial town, it was a little bit ‘shocking’ which was enjoyable for me’.
“There are also numerous crosses dotted around my home, once again more from a design perspective than any other significant reason. When I look at the collection, there are different shapes and sizes, some are carved out of wood, others are metal or pottery, and there is even one made from beads. They are different colours, different textures, different shapes, some smooth, others heavily textured; I love them all’.
“It’s fair to say that when I began my journey with www.oceanj.co.uk I was immediately attracted to the Ayala Bar cross collection because of all the factors mentioned in this post. The colours are sensational, the stonework is awesome, the added textures and the different shapes makes them all highly desirable. I find any artist who uses the cross shape in their chosen medium always stamps an identity on [their] work that makes it utterly unique, this is definitely the case with Ayala bar’.
“Each one of the crosses available on here I would be thrilled to own and I would wear with enormous pride as they are beautifully crafted and a real statement piece”.
