The use of leather has been with us since man was a primitive hunter. It is one of our earliest discoveries, also one of our most useful. Here we look at a brief history of this fascinating material and a brand we at Oceanj believe fits our values perfectly.
Leather was used to protect us from the elements. With clothing and footwear crafted from the hides of animals hunted for food.
As it was in stone-age times, so it is the same today, leather hides are a by-product and approximately 25% of all leather is used in clothing and accessories, 50% for shoes and a small amount, approximately 15% is used in upholstery.
Leather was used in all ancient civilizations with artifacts dating back to 5000 B.C. having been discovered.
The Romans in particular used leather for footwear and clothes, and also for military equipment.
Leather is now available in a multitude of different textures and finishes, from ultra smooth to rough grain. It’s also multi coloured as technologies have allowed the material to be treated in lots of different ways.
Looking for leather accessories for our site, Gail discovered collections that show off the beauty of leather in stylish and practical ways.
Handbags, pouches, purses, wallets, rucksacks, shoppers, they are all available in every shape, size and colour possible.
Gail says: “Here at Oceanj we choose our leather goods carefully, taking into consideration the ethical values of the brands as well as the designs and desirability of them. That’s why Drift is such an important range, it offers a collection that is stylish and ‘on trend’ and the raw material, aniline cow leather, is a responsibly sourced by-product imported from Italy and South America”.
