Continuing our posts from featured designers, this month we catch up with Lisa Beaumont of Powder UK and find out more about the brand and the driving force behind it.
Q: What is your name and where are you from?
A: Lisa Beaumont, Edinburgh
Q: Lisa, did you always want to be a designer?
A: Absolutely, I was making little outfits for my teddies from age 5!
Q: Can you tell us how your career started?
A: At the age of 17 I trained as a welder – designing and making furniture. By 21 I had created ranges for the likes of Libertys and Peter Jones.
Q: What other careers might you have chosen had designing not been your chosen path?
A: I think being a make up artist would be great fun! Lots of travel and chat!
Q: Can you share with us how you start the process of designing / creating something?
A: Every season starts with a single central theme – its normally something rather quirky and always full of colour! This AW16 it was a scarf print depicting Woodland friends all dashing home to their toadstool home they share!
Q: So where does the inspiration come from?
A: Anything from vintage children’s story books to old wallpaper. I’m a big fan of Rupert the Bear Annuals!
Q: From the initial idea to the completed product…. How long does the process usually take?
A: It can take up to 18 months from initial idea to the collection hitting the stores. I’m generally working on up to 3 seasons at once so that’s over 750 products whizzing around my head at one time. Luckily I have a fairly good memory!
Q: Which designers do you admire?
A: Matthew Williamson is a favourite; his patterns are well crafted, complex and full of colour.
Q: Out of all of the collections and pieces you have designed, do you have an all time favourite?
A: Our ‘Love Token’ scarf from AW15. Two field mice fall in love over a bramble berry, they share it under the stars. Yes.. you guessed it, I’m a hopeless romantic!
Q: Outside of your own designs, do you have an all time favourite ‘object’ that you wish you had designed?
A: A beautiful perfume bottle gifted to me years ago. Its 300 years old and made from cut crystal. I never get tired of looking at it.
Q: Powder UK is a very colourful brand, what is your favourite colour and why?
A: I have 2! Pink and also Orange – they are happy, warm and wonderfully complementary colours.
Q: Here at oceanj we are very curious about our chosen designers collections and what they might be working on at present. Can you tell us what we might expect to see in your next collection?
A: The cutest socks known to mankind! We are launching our Petite Powder collection, teeny socks for little ladies and babies. They are completely adorable!
Q: What hobbies do you have?
A: Walking with my lovely labradoodle Flossie, travelling with my sons Charlie and Max.
Q: Where is your most favourite place in the world and why?
A: A teeny tiny beach in Greece. It has a single rock out in the water with a big red crab that lives there. It’s fabulous for snorkelling and I have to visit ‘Crabby rock’ every year with my friend to see how the crab is doing!
Q: And finally Lisa, can you share with us something that nobody knows about you?
A: I could do… but then of course I’d have to kill you!!
Thanks for being such a colourful interviewee Lisa, it was a pleasure catching up with you, and we look forward to seeing the ‘petite powder’ collection soon.
