In our on-going series of interviews with designers, we caught up with German fashion designer Tina Awtani, the creator of Cashmere Rebel.
Oceanj asked Tina:
Did you always want to be a designer?
“I am by nature a very creative person, obsessed with details, but not in particular drawn to design actually”.
And can you tell our readers, how did your career start?
“After attending business school and achieving my MBA I landed my first job in a large fashion corporation. Then I moved to Milan, where I dived into the designer culture and things just took off…”
What other careers you might have chosen had designing not been your chosen path?
“My second passion is journalism. A few years ago, I needed a creative break from fashion and quickly made it from journalist to editor. It was a dream job, but I missed the fashion world badly. So I focussed on my crystal embellished cashmere shawls and as it turned out, this is a fantastic product with a quickly growing, international fan base”.
can you describe and tell us about how you start the process of designing / creating something.
“I sit in my orangery-like studio, which has huge windows and is surrounded by splendid gardens. The different seasons, the changing weather and the variety of lights have a huge impact on my creativity”.
With such beautiful creations, where does the inspiration come from?
‘It just comes without warning :)”
The intricacy of the designs is fascinating, but from the initial idea to the completed product, how long does the process usually take?
“It can take weeks, even months for a sketch to be realised. The colours and the materials need to be perfect, before anything qualifies for entry into the collection”.
What designers do you admire?
“My heart belongs to the classic Italians. I tend to have a weakness for Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana”.
It’s a difficult question for a designer to answer, but do you have an all time favourite piece that you have designed?
“The FLEUR DE LIS is so simple, yet so powerful. Just perfect”.
Do you have an all time favourite ‘object’ that you wish you had designed?
“Too many to choose from, I really am spoilt for choice here!”
Cashmere Rebel pashmina’s are ablaze with colour, what is your favourite colour and why?
“Pink, because it’s so positive. Though I do also love the power of monochrome”.
Can you tell us what we might expect to see in your next collection?
“There is definitely more sparkle to come”.
What hobbies do you have?
“Leisure time is a little limited due to my three teenage sons, two dogs, an amazing husband and Cashmere Rebel. But I do love a good round of golf”.
Where is your most favourite place in the world and why?
“I love being by the seaside, but Kensington Gardens are also great for a little mini-break during lunch”.
And finally, can you share with us something that nobody knows about you?
“I grew up next to Jil Sander’s property in Germany and occasionally caught a glimpse of the great designer. She is my role model. Karl Lagerfeld also grew up close by…”
